An agreement for a cross-license between Nichia Corporation and Savant Technologies LLC, also known as GE Lighting, a Savant firm, has been made public. According to the contract, Nichia will grant Savant a license under its filament LED lightbulb patents, including U.S. Patent No. 9,752,734. Nichia will be granted a license to supply LEDs with PFS phosphor, also known as potassium fluoride silicon, in the home and retail market channels. The U.S. Patent Nos. 7,497,973 and 7,453,195 are two of the patents that Nichia is licensed to use under the cross license.
This cross license attests to the value of the lighting-related patents held by each company. The "Vintage Style" LED lightbulbs from Savant, which combine energy-efficient and durable LED technology with a classic Edison-bulb aesthetic, are covered by Nichia's patents. The Nichia LEDs with their distinctive narrow-band red emission, which demonstrates great color rendering and efficiency, are covered by the patents licensed from Savant in the consumer space.
Customers of both businesses will gain from this cross license as well. Customers of Savant will still have access to premium LED lighting options in a range of designs. Customers in these areas will profit from the outstanding color quality, efficiency, and value of Nichia's PFS LEDs because they are now accessible for all general lighting markets, including the residential and retail channels.
